Three simple things to help you travel around the island with confidence.

Getting around
Buses and trains are generally very affordable compared with taxis, and we recommend giving them a try. Buses can play loud music, so earplugs can come in handy.
For tuk-tuks, agree on a price before your ride or choose a metered tuk-tuk when possible. Ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber may be available in some cities.
Train tip: Check current routes and service notices, as some tracks may be affected by cyclone-related disruptions. Intercity reservations can sell out. If that happens, ask at the station about second-class tickets; you may need to stand for part of the journey.

Eat like a local
Don't miss kottu, hoppers, string hoppers, kiribath (milk rice), rice & curry and pittu. You'll also find South Indian favourites like thosai in many cities.
Try tropical fruits and a refreshing king coconut while you're here.

What to wear
Casual holiday clothes are fine in most places. Dress a little more conservatively while travelling locally. At temples, kovils and other places of worship, cover your shoulders and legs and follow posted rules.
